The total number of positive cases in the State has now touched 7,74,710 with 11,520 active cases. Chennai recorded 467 fresh cases on Wednesday, with 4,206 active cases in the city.
In the districts, Coimbatore recorded 149 fresh cases, and Chengalpattu 76 fresh cases. Tiruvallur recorded 89 fresh cases and Kancheepuram 63. Erode reported 72 new cases, Salem 61, and Tirupur 77.
Of the 16 deaths, eight were recorded in public health facilities and eight in private hospitals. Only two of the recorded deaths did not have pre-existing comorbid conditions.
Around 1,873 patients were discharged following treatment on Wednesday, bringing the total number of recoveries in the State to 7,51,535. The recovery rate in the city stands at around 97 per cent.
Nearly 68,082 samples were tested across 218 public and private testing facilities across the State, bringing the total number of samples tested across the State so far to 1,17,41,603.
Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan inspected the Mahabalipuram Government General Hospital as a precautionary measure in the wake of Cyclone Nivar threat. Relief camps and 108 accident stabilisation centres have been established at low-lying areas.
