In a notice put up in Vaniyambadi taluk police station, the public were warned against entering into any sales transaction with this family as all their assets were purchases with ill-gotten gain from the illicit trade and hence was being investigated for being seized by the government. The notice created a stir in the town as for years this notorious family was considered to be beyond the pale of the law.
But what intrigued officials was that the king pin behind this was a woman Maheswari (39) wife of one Srinivasan of the town’s Nethaji nagar who along with her daughters Usha and Kavya and son Devendran were arrested in the middle of last month and are now lodged in the Vellore central prison. Though imprisoned many times, Maheswari had always returned to ply her trade with renewed vigour. When Tirupattur SP P Vijayakumar initiated action, many felt it would only be an eyewash and hence were surprised when the police arrested the family excepting husband Srinivasan, who is still absconding. Following the arrest police seized Rs.20.34 lakh cash from their house which was the proceeds of the sale of 21 kilos ganja. The cops had also seized three two wheelers. So great was Maheswari’s clout that both police and the press refrained from taking photos of her arrest and only showed visuals of a woman constable who was injured during the arrest when Vijayakumar visited her in the hospital.
