A week after the mysterious death of a farmer in a radio explosion, Salem police made a breakthrough with the arrest of his brother for plotting the murder by developing an improvised explosive device.
In the impact of the blast, Marimuthu’s granddaughter aged 12 and his relative Vasanthakumar, 37 also suffered injuries. Even as the probe was underway, Sengodan, 64, the elder brother of the deceased attempted suicide and was admitted to a hospital.
Inquiries revealed that the murder was plotted by him over a property dispute with the pathway to their farmland with his brother. He had attempted suicide out of fear of getting caught by police.
With a plan to execute his brother, Sengodan constructed the explosive device with detonators and gelatin sticks purchased from a shop in Namakkal district.
“His expertise in electrical works came in handy to make the explosive device, which he fixed in a radio tuned to explode, if connected to power. He then left the bag with the radio along with two liquor bottles and some snacks near the house of his brother. His plan worked out too as Marimuthu took the radio home,” police said.
