In an expression of increased awareness about COVID-19, traders in and around a village in Thanjavur voluntarily downed shutters of over 100 shops for 15 days after a person from the village tested positive for the virus. They also appealed to the district administration to close the Tasmac outlets in the locality.
On Sunday, a person from one among the villages had tested positive for COVID-19 and so the traders from Marungulam had a meeting in which they decided to down shutters for 15 days from Monday and asked their customers from these villages to stay away from shopping. Except for medical shops, petrol bunks and Tasmac outlets, all other commercial outlets were closed from Monday.
“We are aware that the business would be affected for us during these days, but health is more important during the times of pandemic. We have also created awareness among the villagers,” said Ramesh, a trader from Marungulam.
Ramesh also said that they had faced similar situations during the lockdown and their business was affected a lot and this time they had volunteered to down shutters. “At the same time, we urge the district administration to close all the Tasmac outlets in these villages which would ensure prevention of virus spread,” Ramesh added.
