Despite several official restrictions to the installation of illegal banners in the State, especially after techie R Subhasri’s death last year creating a furore across the nation, norms continue to be flouted. On Wednesday, banners were seen on both sides of the road at Sunguvarchatram to welcome Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for an inaugural function. Police have registered a case.
Flag posts were also seen on both sides along with a few arches and cut-outs of the Chief Minister. Sources said these hindered public movement and that the AIADMK party cadre had not obtained permission for the installation either.
Even during Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mahabalipuram in October last year, huge banners had been installed across the State, but after permission from the Corporation.
On Wednesday night, Sunguvarchatram police registered a case based on a complaint by Revenue Inspector A Padmapriya. Sources said since there were no names mentioned on the banners, those behind its installation are yet to traced. When contacted, Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police B Shamoondeswari confirmed that a case has been registered.
