The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was celebrated at Puducherry Raj Nivas on Tuesday.
In the interaction organised, students selected from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology and Computer Science of Tagore Government Arts and Science College participated along with the faculty members.
Addressing them, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said that it’s important that the students get to know about the scientists, particularly women scientists, who’ve helped to change the world through their contributions and discoveries.
She also asked them to keep track of the way to explore the possibilities of scholarships and other funding to motivate studies and research in the field of science.
The Lt Governor advised them to create a forum as “Puducherry Women & Girls’ Science Foundation” under the leadership of faculties and register the same to enable to increase the girls’ participation as members in science arena and to open a WhatsApp Group to discuss science-related topics, cutting across all streams of the college.
Dr K Jayalakshmi, faculty member, Department of Zoology, Tagore Government Arts and Science College, said that the Science Foundation and the WhatsApp Group is an innovative idea and it offers a strong potential for increasing girls’ interest in science. She said that it will provide a common platform for all science departments in the College.
