A former Railway staffer who kidnapped a 17-year-old mentally challenged girl from Andhra Pradesh in October 2019, has been arrested under the Pocso Act for raping her several times after confining her in his house for the last four months. The victim is now four months pregnant.
Keeping her captive in his house, Shankar raped the minor several times. However, the girl escaped from the house about a week ago and reached MGR Chennai Central to return home.
While she managed to inform her relatives about her whereabouts over phone, Railway Protection Force personnel rescued her at the station and sent her to a Children’s shelter. The girl’s family reached the city and the RPF personnel helped her reunite with her family.
Investigation revealed that the girl was sexually assaulted by Shankar and a medical examination revealed that she was pregnant. Based on a complaint, Tiruvottiyur all-women police registered a case under Pocso Act and remanded Shankar Rao to judicial custody.
Police said that the girl went missing when she was going to a temple with her family members in Visakhapatnam and a complaint had been lodged at the local police station.
Police pointed out that Shankar’s wife had separated from him as he was an alcoholic and was quite irregular to work.
“Though he was sacked, he continued to stay in the railway quarters without electricity and water supply. Neighbours were aware of the girl’s presence, but they were under the impression that she was his relative,” a police officer said.
