The opposition to the nomination of K Devaraj as the Vellore west district secretary is mounting among the DMK cadre with the party leaders preventing his entry to the town, alleging that he is acting hand-in-glove with the Vellore AIADMK.
Their unrest was based on the fact that Devaraj, who was the district secretary in 2016, was angry at not being given a seat in that year’s Assembly elections and hence ‘did not work’ for the DMK candidate in Vaniyambadi constituency, resulting in the AIADMK’s Nilofer Kafeel winning and finally becoming the Labour Minister.
This had resulted in the DMK high command ousting him from his post and replacing him with Muthutamizh Selvi, a lady. Even then there had been talk that Devaraj was in cahoots with Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani, who was then the Vellore west district secretary for the AIADMK.
An angry AIADMK cadre PS Kumaresan said, “We hope that at least now the top brass will understand the illicit understanding between the minister and his supporters with the rival DMK based on caste considerations as Veeramani, Devaraj and DMK Katpadi strongman Duraimurugan are all Vannias by caste.”
Though the AIADMK cadre were angry at this bonhomie, they could do nothing as their complaints to the high command did not lead to remedial action. In fact, when the media sought Veeramani’s reaction to Duraimurugan’s statement that the AIADMK rule would end in 23 days, during the Vellore Lok Sabha elections, he bypassed it saying that he was too junior to reply to a senior politician like Duraimurugan and that Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam would do so, shocking party cadre present.
