With Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry selecting 20 best performing cities in the country, two districts from Tamil Nadu has found a spot in the list. Tirupur was ranked third while Vellore received rank 10 in the 20 best performing smart cites ranking.
While comparing to other cities, tenders were issued and work orders given in most of the projects under smart city scheme in Tirupur. “Works on most of the proposed projects have commenced and are being executed at a faster pace,” the commissioner said.
Except renovation of old bus stand and daily market, most other projects have either got over or under progress. “Four parks that were taken up under the smart city project have got over at a cost outlay of Rs 3.83 crores. Other works such as modernization of three markets including fish market and flower market, two solar power projects and similar development works are underway,” the official said. The Corporation has taken up projects worth over 1,000 crores. Works are also carried out under Amrut scheme, he said
Reiterating the same, Vellore Corporation Engineer V Srinivasan said that Tirupur received third rank as Tirupur started the tender processes earlier than Vellore. “In Vellore various smart city projects including renovation of the new bus stand, drainage work, multi-level car parking work and even road related works were already being taken at an estimated cost of more than Rs 100 crores,” he said.
The Corporation undertook desilting work at the Vellore fort’s moat at Rs 33 crore while similar amount was earmarked to beautify the Vellore fort. The bus stand renovation work started four days back and work to demolish the existing structures in the new bus stand has started.
On the ranking, Corporation Commissioner K Krishnamurthy said that this might be due to the Corporation’s steps to get public views on the ‘ease of living concept’ under the smart city project.
