On Friday, the villagers of Kaliyapet in Salavakkam near Uthiramerur noticed that Periyar statue in their village was damaged. Someone had broken the head and hand of the statue. The news spread among the villagers and the political party members and a few NGO members gathered on the spot and began to protest to take action against the people who damaged the statue. Salavakkam police team which arrived at the spot convinced the agitators. The police covered the damaged statue and placed barricades.
Following the incident, several policemen were deployed to patrol at Salavakkam. Police said the repairing works are on progress and soon the anti-socials who are behind this will be traced and action will be taken against them.
Following the incident, DGP JK Tripathy warned that police will take strong action against anti-social elements, who damage the statue of Thanthai Periyar or statues of other leaders in Tamil Nadu.
