Journalist V Anbazhagan (59) was arrested on Sunday for allegedly violating rules of the annual book fair at YMCA grounds by displaying works that were against the State government and he also threatened office bearers of Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), organisers of the fair.
The office-bearers claimed that applicants willing to set up a stall at the fair should fulfil certain conditions, including not displaying and selling books against or banned by the government. “He initially agreed, but flouted rules,” BAPASI representatives said. The organisation president RS Shanmugam had on Saturday sent a notice to Anbazhagan asking him to vacate the stall. “When the committee denied permission for his book launch, he visited our office and verbally abused us,” Shanmugam added. DMK president MK Stalin tweeted, “He should be released and given permission to continue participation in the book fair.”
