An eight-month-old toddler fell off the balcony of a fifth-floor apartment in Sowcarpet and miraculously survived the fall after landing on a parked scooter on the road. Baby Dinisha, however, sustained a fracture on her left leg and bruises on her neck, police said.
Dinisha, who was playing in one of the bedrooms, crawled towards the balcony and fell through an opening in the steel railing parapet around 10.30 am. Police said that while the family had already covered the railing with a metal mesh, Dinisha peeked through a portion that was not properly attached and fell from a height of 50 ft.
“Call it a miracle or otherwise, she fell exactly on the seat of a Honda Activa parked in front of a shop and then slipped onto the ground. An auto driver and a shopkeeper rushed the kid to the Apollo Hospital in Teynampet,” an officer said. The family realised that the baby was missing only 30 minutes later after the shopkeepers went door-to-door to check on whose child it was.
Elephant Gate police said that they went to the spot around 1.30 pm and held inquiries with the family after they received the message from the hospital but no case was registered as there was no official complaint about the incident.
