Direct elections to mayor and municipal chairman posts, provision of voter verifiable paper audit trail and objection to multi phased elections were some of the key issues raised by the Opposition during the all-party meeting called by Tamil Nadu State Election Commission here on Thursday.
Deputy Speaker and AIADMK leader Pollachi Jayaraman, AIADMK advocate Babu Murugavel, DMK legal wing functionaries NR Elango and R Girirajan took part in the discussion. Representatives of the national parties, including BJP, Congress, NCP, TMC, BSP, CPI and CPM participated.
The DMK representatives demanded transparency in conduct of civic polls with live streaming of CCTV coverage. They also objected to two phase polling that was practised in 2011. Political parties also demanded adequate time for poll preparation and campaign.
The SEC had also already urged district collectors, corporation commissioners and local body special officers to publish the voters roll and the copies have been served to political parties in October. Since then there was no major development with the SEC.
The election will be held in more than 90,000 polling booths and the all the urban areas will have EVM machines for polling and ballot boxes will be used for rural areas, informed sources said.
“We have doubts with the SEC and the meeting looks like an eye wash. If it announces poll schedule, we will demand for IAS officers as poll observers and provision of CCTV cameras at all polling stations,” an AMMK district functionary told DT Next.
It may be noted that the SEC on November 18 informed the Supreme Court that notification for local body elections will be issued on December 2 and the govt is on an inaugural spree.
Meanwhile, the DMK moved the SC on Thursday seeking a direction to the SEC to conduct civic polls only after fresh delimitation exercise in the wake of the formation of five new districts.
