Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami reiterated that the local body elections would be conducted as planned and there was no connection between new districts inauguration and the civic polls.
It was the DMK which introduced direct and indirect elections to mayor’s posts, but now acting as it was an AIADMK move, charged Chief Minister Palaniswami while inaugurating the new Ranipet district.
Lashing out at DMK deputy opposition leader Duraimurugan, he said the latter was wantonly giving wrong information about the government’s stand on Karnataka constructing a dam across the Markandeya river, he said the Opposition was creating an impression that the government had failed in the Supreme Court, whereas the next hearing on the issue was posted to January 10, next year. Stating that the government would take all steps to safeguard the rights of state farmers, he said the government would consult legal experts following the Supreme Court verdict on the South Pennar issue on November 14.
Refuting DMK president MK Stalin’s charge that the AIADMK government was playing second fiddle to the BJP-led Central government, he said the AIADMK was able to get the AIIMS and 9 medical colleges. Palaniswami demanded to know how many medical colleges and Central government schemes the DMK was able to get when it was part of the Centre. “All the DMK government achieved was securing posts for their family members,” he added.
The Chief Minister also handed out government largesse and laid the foundation for the new buildings and inaugurated various schemes in the newly formed districts.
On people related issues, he said the recently started Chief Minister’s special grievance day programme had received a total of 9.72 lakh petitions, of which 5.11 lakh were accepted, 13,449 were rejected and 73,000 petitions were acted upon. Similarly, this year 5 lakh persons would be provided old age pension (OAP) of Rs 1,000 a month, he added.
He also informed that the state government was awaiting Centre’s nod to convert the two lane Uthangarai to Vaniyambadi highway to four lanes for which a detailed project report would be prepared shortly.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Ministers, new district collectors of Tirupattur and Ranipet, top government officials participated in the inauguration.
