Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy inaugurated the Tenkasi district on Friday, which was separated from Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
The government announced the division of major districts for administrative convenience in the state. Superintendent of Police and administrative officials for the new districts were recently announced.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Panneer Selvam, Ministers RB Udhayakumar and Rajalakshmi, Chief secretary K Shanmugam, Tirunelveli Collector Shilpa, Tenkasi Collector Arun Sundar Dayalan, Tenkasi SP Suguna Singh among the others.
The Chief Minister will provide welfare assistance to 5,000 beneficiaries in Tenkasi, at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore. About 8 Talukas are incorporated in Tenkasi, which now becomes the 33rd district of Tamil Nadu.
