In a move aimed at creating awareness on the election processes and to educate schoolchildren on how to apply for the voter’s identity card, the Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to create electoral literacy clubs in schools run by the civic body, and efforts are on for the same.
The students would also be trained in filing of nominations and making corrections in the electoral list.
The official added that the electoral literacy club initiative was taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI), which has directed State governments to form the club.
Apart from Corporation schools here, the electoral literacy club would also be constituted in all government schools in the State. Five officials from the Education and Revenue departments, including Chennai Corporation Assistant Education Officer Muniyan, have been appointed as State-level master trainers.
“Training sessions to the State-level master trainers were conducted in New Delhi recently. The master trainers have been allocated certain districts and they will train district-level education and revenue officials,” the official added.
The district-level official would then train one teacher from each of the schools in their respective districts, who would, in turn, train students and coordinate the formation of the clubs.
