A day after several cusecs of water was released from the Vaigai dam in Theni on Saturday for irrigation in Madurai, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram district, the spontaneous flow of water caused flooding in the Vaigai river in Madurai.
Moreover, several parts of Madurai received considerable amount of rainfall in recent days. However, City Engineer S. Arasu of Madurai Corporation, when contacted, said the flow of water over the causeways has nothing to do with rainfall, as all channels were desilted to ensure free flow of water. With the aid of public address system, people had been asked to be cautious while taking glance at these causeways. They were also advised not to take selfie.
Adequate safety precautionary measures were put in place. A total of 28 officials in the rank of assistant engineer had been engaged in monitoring the situation. Further, technical assistants from several wards were also deputed to render assistance, if required, the City Engineer said.
