Police arrested a youth, who sexually assaulted a minor girl and killed her at Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district, on Sunday.
The 15-year-old girl from Sithankathiruppu had gone out to attend to the nature’s call late on Saturday. K Kalyanasundaram, 30, a taxi driver and her neighbour, who had an eye on the girl, had followed her. When he attempted to sexually assault her, she refused, and so he closed her mouth and sexually assaulted her.
When the girl continued to scream out of pain, Kalyanasundaram strangled her to death and escaped after sensing the people running towards the spot.
Interestingly, Kalyanasundaram also searched for the girl along with the residents.
Hearing the girl’s screaming, the parents rushed to the spot and were shocked to see the girl lying with severe injuries. They soon rushed her to a local hospital where she was pronounced brought dead.
On information, Sirkazhi DSP Vanthana and Thiruvenkadu police rushed to the spot and conducted an investigation.
Meanwhile, the girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the Thiruvenkadu police who registered a case and conducted investigation in which they found that a car driver who had an eye on the minor girl had been following her for the last few days. On questioning, Kalyanasundaram had confessed to the police that he had murdered the girl.
On Sunday, the body of the girl was handed over to the parents after post-mortem while Kalyanasundaram was booked under various IPC sections including Pocso Act and was later lodged in a prison.
