A 37-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured when a Police Department bus allegedly hit them at Thirikoodapuram bus-stop near Puliyangudi, Tirunelveli district, on Saturday.
The deceased victim has been identified as Ayeesha Beevi, wife of Mydheen Pichai, resident of Pallivasal Street, Thirikoodapuram. While Ayeesha Beevi succumbed to injuries on the spot, the injured victims, identified as Kansal Beevi, 30, daughter of Dheen Oli, neighbour of deceased victim, and Ashika, 17, daughter of the deceased, were taken to Government Hospital, the sources said.
However, the condition of the injured Kanasal is said to be critical. She suffered head injuries and suffered fractures on both arms. The other victim suffered fracture on her left arm, the sources said. Agitated by this, scores of people took to the accident spot and blocked vehicular traffic seeking arrest of the driver. Traffic was affected for about half an hour, but the police personnel pacified the agitating crowd and was dispersed later.
Meanwhile, Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena, when contacted, said the bus with 40 police personnel on board unfortunately hit those standing at the bus-stop after one of its tyres got burst and the driver lost control. The bus smashed through three flag poles of a political party before hitting them, the SP said. The bus, carrying the police personnel, who were deputed for bandobust duty ahead of the Supreme Court’s Ayodya verdict, was proceeding to Puliyangudi police sub divisional office to report for duty from Tenkasi.
