Heavy rain threw life out of gear in Salem district on Saturday as several residential areas were inundated and some pockets were flooded owing to a breach in a lake in the town.
Due to the showers accompanied by strong winds, age old trees in several areas were uprooted on Ammapettai-Salem main road. As a result, movement of vehicles was affected for long hours on the arterial stretch. Similarly, reports of tree falls came in from areas in and around Ayyanthirumaligai, housing unit, Judges Quarters and other important locations across the district.
A big lake in Periyar Nagar near the junction that had filled to the brim suffered a breach. This resulted in water entering into houses in several areas and they were cut off from the other parts of the town. Irate residents from Puthur area attempted to besiege the house of Salem West MLA Venkatachalam and attempted to block the road.
However, police rushed to the spot and pacified the residents.
According to the meteorological department, Kadayampatti received the maximum rainfall of 107 mm, Omalur 92.3, Salem 64, Athur 50, Edappadi 47 and Mettur 6.8 mm.
The heavy rain that lashed Yercaud created instant stream in many parts on the hills and on ghat roads. Sources said that many new waterfalls were also spotted on Yercaud hills. While a low-level bridge was completely submerged in ATC Nagar near Gorimedu, Cinema Nagar near the city central bus stand was also inundated. “Water entered into more than 50 houses in Arisipalayam in the city,” a Corporation official said.
The Salem MP Parthiban visited the places affected by the rainwater. He instructed the district administration to initiate steps to immediately drain out the water from the rain-hit areas.
