Despite palpable tension in the air, peace largely prevailed in the communally sensitive Coimbatore and other Western districts on Saturday when the Supreme Court delivered its verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case.

Nandakumar
Coimbatore:
All the communal groups in Coimbatore were found restraining from either celebrating or holding protests in view of the verdict. Right wing Hindu groups, however, welcomed the judgment. BJP district president Nandakumar here said that the apex court has put an end to the long struggle of the two communities. On the other hand, Muslim organisations expressed disappointment. The court direction to give alternate land to Muslims for construction of masjid is insignificant and bears no justice, said PFI district president Anwar Hussain. Despite the contrary views, the day here passed off without any major law and order issues.
