A labourer, who murdered his neighbour and his wife, for jewels she was wearing, was sentenced to double life terms by the Vellore Mahila Court on Friday.
Sakthivel, 44, was living alone as his wife had left him due to his constant drinking. He used to indulge in theft to satisfy his craving for liquor as his parents refused him money to indulge his habit. Sakthivel had noticed Meena always wearing gold ear-rings and a golden thali, and he decided to steal them. On January 3, 2015, when Rajendran and Meena were asleep in their house, Sakthivel reached their house around 11 pm with a stone pestle. When Rajendran woke up on hearing the sound of footsteps, Sathivel hit him on his head with the stone, killing him on the spot. Meena too met with the same fate when she woke up on hearing her husband screaming.
Sakthivel then stole the gold ear-rings and the golden mangalsutra and fled the scene. When Rajendran’s sons were informed of their parents’ death, his son Sivakumar came to the village and then complained to the Tirupattur taluk police, who registered a case and after investigation arrested Sakthivel. The case was handled by the Vellore Mahila Court where judge Selvan sentenced Sakthivel to double life terms – to run concurrently – with a fine of Rs5,000. The prisoner was then locked up in the Vellore Central Prison.
