Anxious moments prevailed in the special camp at the Tiruchy Central Prison on Friday as some of the inmates of different nationalities, who were observing fast for the second day, allegedly consumed sedatives.
The inmates were demanding immediate release of those against whom court proceedings have been completed and to expedite arrangements for their immediate deportation to their respective countries.
As many as 46 inmates, including 22 Sri Lankan Tamils, and an equal number of Bangladeshis were observing fast since Thursday night. The camp houses 72 inmates belonging to different countries that include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China and Bulgaria.
While, cases against some inmates were pending, the proceedings against some others have been completed. They were booked in various police stations across the State including under the Foreigners Act for overstaying in India, illegal entry through fake passport, narcotic peddling etc. The authorities were taking steps to deport the foreign nationals against whom cases have been completed, while a few Bangladeshis were all set to return back to their country soon, the sources said.
