Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday kick-started the distribution of free laddus to pilgrims at the renowned Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai through video-conferencing.
The laddus will each weigh around 30 grams and a team of 15 workers were designated for preparation of the sweet under hygienic conditions. Gram flour, ghee, sugar, cardamom, cashew and raisins will be procured by the state for production of the sweet, sources said. According to the Hindu Religious and Charities Endowment Department sources, the scheme was planned for Deepavali, but delayed owing to the procurement of machines to make laddus.
Palaniswami also inaugurated various temple buildings constructed at a cost of Rs 2.63 crore in Ratnagiri, Alangudi and Peerkankaranai temples maintained by the state.
In another function organised by the state Labour Department, the Chief Minister inaugurated new buildings constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore. The buildings comprised industrial training institutes, classrooms for polytechnic centres and advanced integrated centres for the labour department. Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel and senior officials took part.
