The Vellore additional fast track court sentenced a man and his wife to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for the murder of his mother over a property dispute in 2017, on Tuesday. They were also sentenced to jail for 7 years for attempting to hide the crime.
In 2017, Arumugam’s mother Rani was grazing livestock on her farm when Arumugam and his wife Priya (30) picked up a quarrel with her. Arumugam wanted the property be bequeathed to him. As Rani refused to do so, the couple attacked her and when Rani ran home, they followed her and smothered her to death with a pillow. They then attempted to burn the body with diesel in their farm. But, being unable to destroy it, Arumugam and Priya buried the body in their farm and went home.
Meanwhile, when Rani’s daughter Anandi realised that her mother was missing, she approached the Katpadi police who found out the truth and arrested Arumugam and Priya.
