Tension prevailed in Thanjavur after several pro-Tamil activists, members of political parties and the members of Women Self Help staged a protest after miscreants desecrated the statue of Thiruvalluvar at Pillayarpatti near Thanjavur on Monday.
On Monday, it was noticed that there was a splash of cow dung on the statue and blindfolded its eyes by painting it black. As soon as the information passed, the Vallam police rushed to the spot and cleaned the dirt and garlanded the statue. Meanwhile, the information of desecrating triggered a series of protests by people and demanded strict action against the miscreants. On Monday the members of various political parties had staged a protest with the portrait of Thiruvalluvar. While the Tamil University students staged a protest in front of their university and demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants. The protesters said that Thiruvalluvar was a holy poet beyond any caste, religion and race. Later, the Central Zone IG of Police Varadharaju said that four special teams were formed which are led by the Vallam DSP Seetharaman. He said that the CCTV footage which was secured by the police revealed that a middle-aged man had been roaming around the statue around 11 pm.
