The police on Monday foiled attempts by two people to set themselves on fire in the Tiruvannamalai collector’s office premises on the occasion of the weekly grievances day.
So, he pulled out a can of kerosene and doused himself with it. The police immediately snatched the can away from him and after an inquiry took him to meet collector KS Kandasamy. In another incident, 60-year-old Vattan from Mel Pennathur was upset that his repeated petitions regarding issues over land was not being heard and so he attempted immolation himself, but was prevented by the police who pulled away the can of kerosene and doused him with water. He was also taken to the collector after an initial inquiry. Speaking to DT Next, Kandasamy said that the grievances of both the men would be looked into, following which the police let Chinnaar and Vattan go.
