Left parties on Monday condemned desecration of the statue of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar at Pillayarpatti near Thanjavur.
“Two days back, the members of BJP started sharing the photos of Thiruvalluvar in saffron attire on social media to give him a particular religious identity to demean him. Thiruvalluvar upheld human values and stood beyond caste, religious and language identities. People will not accept the attempts to give religious identity or to desecrate Thiruvalluvar’s statue,” he said.
CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said that neither an individual nor organisation could appropriate Thiruvalluvar. “Thirukural which is over 2,000-year-old was translated into world languages. BJP cadre and its supporters sharing of a picture of Thiruvalluvar with saffron attire and holy ash is highly condemnable. The state government should take action against them,” he said.
A statue of Thiruvalluvar, located close to the Thanjavur Collectorate and superintendent police office was desecrated, he said, adding that it seems to be a planned act with an ulterior motive. “The state government and the police should take action without any hesitation on those who involved in desecration of the statue,” he demanded.
