The Central government announced the ‘Icon of Golden Jubilee- Life Time Achiever Award’ for Rajinikanth, on Saturday. Though the award was cheered by his fans there was mixed political reactions for it.
The AIADMK, BJP, PMK and even MDMK welcomed the award for Rajinikanth and extended wishes for the actor, but VCK and TNML questioned why the award was not given to Kamal Haasan and only to Rajinikanth.
“Rajinikanth is a great person and a wonderful actor. He is good hearted and speaks right from his heart. He has contributed a lot for the development of cinema in India and as a fan I welcome the award and extend wishes for the actor,” said Minister for Cooperation Sellur Raju.
Similarly, PMK founder S Ramadoss, who was highly critical of Rajinikanth in his initial years in politics even congratulated the actor for the award. “I am happy at Rajinikanth being conferred with the award ‘Icon of Golden Jubilee’ and I wish him further success in his life,” Ramadoss tweeted.
The BJP, which is seen inclining towards Rajinikanth and promoting him in the political arena also welcomed the award and congratulated him. “Rajinikanth who is an achiever in films has now been conferred with the lifetime achiever award. The award is prestigious for the state,” said party’s national general secretary H Raja, in a tweet.
Apart from the ruling parties and parties in alliance with the ruling parties, one of the opposition parties MDMK also extended wishes to Rajinikanth on the occasion. Party leader Vaiko, over phone, congratulated Rajinikanth for the award and told him that he is eligible to receive the award.
However, the VCK questioned the award announced for Rajinikanth and indirectly criticised the Union government. “Kamal is a multi-faceted personality. He is an actor, choreographer, singer, lyricist, director, producer and has worked in the cinema industry for 60 years. Has someone achieved more than what Kamal Haasan achieved,” asked VCK general secretary and Villupuram MP Ravi Kumar in a tweet. Bad example, says TNML
Similarly, TNML founding president VMS Mustafa questioned the Centre over the reason for choosing Rajinikanth for the award. He also criticised Rajinikanth for smoking and consuming alcohol on the screen.
“There are many actors who have given social message through their movies and songs, but Rajinikanth on the contrary has smoked and consumed alcohol. Many youngsters have started to smoke and consume alcohol after seeing Rajinikanth’s movie,” said Mustafa, in a statement.
