The rising ‘son’ of DMK could soon eclipse his aunt in the party. DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin would soon have his own young women’s wing, which, undoubtedly, would clip the wings of aunt Kanimozhi, who heads the party women’s wing.
If information trickling out of Anna Arivalayam were something to go by, DMK president MK Stalin had personally informed his stepsister Kanimozhi about the proposed young women’s wing and even sought her opinion on the same a few weeks ago. Understandably, an exasperated Kanimozhi was learnt to have subtly resisted the idea before reluctantly giving her consent, thanks to the persuasion of Stalin who was understood to have not consulted his party senior’s vis a vis the formation of the new wing affiliated to the youth wing.
A party leader who did not wish to be named admitted that the second rung leaders were unimpressed, but they could not express their views frankly. “What else do you expect from Kanimozhi other than giving consent when the president personally asks her? The proposed wing might strengthen the new youth wing secretary, but it will make the existing women’s wing redundant. Everyone knows that,” said a party senior requesting anonymity.
“If young women will be led by the young wing secretary, will the existing women’s wing be a group of oldies? Even the older women members would only report to the powerful youth wing secretary who leads their young party colleagues in future,” a party leader quipped, recalling how Karunanidhi had declined the same Kanimozhi’s request to offer her Student’s wing leadership, unwilling to disturb then secretary Pugazhendi.
The youth wing, sources disclosed, that it has been screening potential members for the young women’s wing, which would have not only committed, but financially resourceful women as its members.
