Referring to the recent incident that has shook the village, A Kathir, executive director, Evidence, a Madurai based Non-Governmental Organization, sought immediate arrest of the one who assaulted the youth after passing casteist remarks against him.

Further, Kathir said only after pressuring the government, Kannan, the prime accused has been arrested on October 10 but his son Manoj, the other accused, is absconding. Kathir said that Manoj should be arrested immediately. He also demanded Theni Collector and Superintendent of Police to inquire into the issue to prevent further atrocities and sought the government to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation to the injured victim.

It may be recalled that S Sundar, a 23-year old youth, came under the attack of an upper caste man of the same village as the Dalit youth was seated with his legs crossed in front of his house on October 7. M Kannan, an upper caste man, who passed Sundar’s house on a bike yelled at Sundar for sitting cross legged and commanded him to uncross his legs.

Subsequently, the youth asked Kannan to keep his tongue under control. Irked over this, Kannan left the place momentarily and returned with a machete and attacked Sundar resulting in an injury on Sundar’s left forehead. In the wake of this incident, Kannan attempted to flee the scene but his son Manoj snatched away the weapon from his father and caused further injuries to Sundar. Later, a case was registered and Sundar was provided treatment at Theni GH.
