Beer lovers in the State will have something to cheer about as the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is planning to soon open exclusive beer vending outlets in the major cities including Chennai, Tiruchy, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem.
A senior official from Tasmac told DT Next that the government is also planning to reduce the timing of liquor sales very shortly and therefore, the authorities expect further dip in the sales of beer this year. He said, Tasmac used to sell about 25 lakh beer cases every year and in 2018-19, the sales were down by 23 lakh cases (each case contain 12 bottles). “To increase the revenue, it has been decided to open exclusive beer outlets in important cities such as Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem,” he state.
“During the first phase, ten outlets will be opened in Chennai and officials are in the process of identifying malls and shopping complexes in and around the city,” he said. The Tasmac official said that during the second phase the outlets will be setup in other cities too.
He also said that it has been identified that many beer consumers are moving towards hotel bars and pubs since their choice of liquor is not available in the regular Tasmac outlets.
“In addition, there were several complaints that only few brands of beer are available in the regular Tasmac liquor shops and more over many State-run outlets do not serve chill beer due various reasons,” he said and pointed out that each exclusive beer outlet will have minimum 100 brands of beer, which also includes imported ones.
