Vigilance officials conducted searches on the Arni regional transport office (RTO) in Tiruvannamalai district and seized unaccounted cash of Rs 4 lakh on Friday, after repeated complaints of bribery.
In the wake of repeated complaints of rampant bribery at the office, a 11-member vigilance team, led by DSP Devanathan from Vellore, reached the office. They raided several driving school offices in the vicinity and seized various documents, besides cash. They then searched the Arni Regional Transport Office and seized cash from nearly 30 driving school staff, who were present at the RTO. The officials held inquiries with the public, who were in the office, and asked them to give the reason for carrying cash more than the amount required. Officials also sought to know details about the person who demanded bribes from applicants. Later, the money was returned to those who gave proper explanation with supporting documents. But, others were provided receipts for the seized cash and asked to collect it later by producing necessary proof.
The raid which started at 2 pm ended only after three hours.
The vigilance team left the premises with Rs 4 lakh of unaccounted cash. No case has been registered so far.
