Deepavali celebrations for hundreds of engineering students of Anna University and its constituent colleges will be difficult this year as their practical semester exams will be held a day before the festival.
Accordingly, practical exams for slot one will held from October 21 to 26. After a gap of a day (27 — Deepavali festival which falls on a Sunday), the slot two practical exams are scheduled to begin on October 28.
Students, who are mostly coming from outstation and studying in various colleges, claim that they could not celebrate the festival with family since they need to face an exam on the next day to Deepavali.
“My native is Tirunelveli. How it is possible for me to go, celebrate Deepavali and come back in just 24 hours,” S Muthukumar, a student studying in B.E. in Anna University’s constituent college in Chennai said.
He also said that there is no proper students’ union in the campus so that the issue will be taken to the right authorities for solving the issue.
Stating that a representation had been given to the authorities concerned, Muthukumar said, “We are asking to just postpone the exam, which is scheduled to be held on Monday.” Meanwhile, sources from Anna University said that the exam schedule was prepared as per the norms and there will not be any change at this juncture.
However, a senior administration staff of the university said the students’ representation has been forwarded to the higher authorities for consideration. “Still there is one week left for Deepavali. Students could also re-plan their tour schedule even if there is a last minute re-scheduling of exams,” he added.
