The students were later suspended after others in the school staged a sit-in demanding punishment against the guilty. According to sources, Arockianathan, a Chemistry teacher at the government higher secondary school in Jayankondam, was taking classes on Thursday morning when a group of vocational stream students standing outside reportedly teased the girls in the class. Upon informing Arockianathan of the menace, he chided the errant students. However, the next day, six students entered the class where Arockianathan was and got into an argument with him for having scolded them, sources said. When the teacher asked them to leave the class, the students in question allegedly assaulted Arockianathan in which the latter sustained minor injuries and they then escaped. On witnessing the incident, the students from the Chemistry class staged a sit-in, demanding action. On information, the Udayarpalayam DEO, Hari Selvaraj, conducted an inquiry and suspended all the six students.
