In a significant setback to the ruling AIADMK, ally Puthiya Tamilagam led by Dr Krishnasamy announced that his party will not support the AIADMK in by-elections.
Meanwhile AIADMK leaders in charge of the Nanguneri and Vikravandi by polls are upset over the recent difference of opinion among the alliance partners and senior AIADMK leaders claimed that they are likely to reach out to sulking PT leader. Alliance partner John Pandian is also staying away from the AIADMK bypoll campaign since last week.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Nanguneri’s AIADMK campaign when PT cadre raised objections to the drive spearheaded by Minister Vellamandi N Natarajan at Moolakaraipatti. During the campaign, Puthiya Tamilagam cadre led by Dhalavai Pandian, union secretary, raised their voice against using the image of their party leader Krishnasamy in AIADMK’s pamphlet to garner votes. Angry PT cadre questioned the Minister how the AIADMK could use the image of PT leader, who snapped ties with the AIADMK in the ensuing bypoll.
They appealed to the police to seize all such campaign pamphlets from the AIADMK cadre and dispose it off.
However, the Minister convinced the agitating cadre by saying that such pamphlets would not be distributed to voters further. The Minister along with his party men left Moolakaraipatti thereafter, sources said. Black flags were also raised against government in nearly 13 villages over the issue.
