Around 725 cadres including 125 women from DMK and its alliance parties were arrested on Thursday for protesting against steep increase in property tax by the Coimbatore Corporation.
The property tax has been increased steeply for both commercial buildings and residential buildings from April 2018. The civic body has also begun to collect the increased tax with arrears, said the protesters.
Protesting against the hike in property tax, the members of opposition parties including DMK, Congress, CPI, CPM, MDMK, VCK and other parties held a demo by wearing black shirts. They gathered for the demonstration in front of South Taluk Office in Race Course, though police had refused permission.
The protesters also urged the Corporation to roll back the 24/7 water supply scheme awarded to a French firm in Coimbatore. The corporation has awarded a 3,200 crore contract to Suez Ltd for a period of 26 years to take up supply of drinking water to households.
After raising slogans against the Corporation and state government, hundreds of party men squatted on the road resulting in traffic snarls. Then the police arrested the protesters leading to some minor scuffle.
DMK MLA N Karthik, who led the demonstration said that the Corporation should release a white paper on the 24/7 water supply scheme awarded to a French firm. He also threatened that the DMK and its alliance parties will continue the protest until the water project is scrapped and tax hike is rolled back.
The arrested party workers, who were taken to a marriage hall and were released later.
