In a way of condemning the inaction of the officials, residents of ward 18 in Ambur municipality on Thursday went to the municipal office with trash collected from their locality in two autos and dumped them at the doorsteps of the office as the contractor appointed to carry out the work failed to remove the accumulated garbage despite repeated pleas to the officials.
The local body officials on seeing this were taken aback. However, once the agitators left, the officials cleared the garbage dumped on the doorsteps of the office and sent the trash to Kannigapuram dump yard in a garbage mini-truck. The officials also rushed to ward 18 to find out the reason behind the agitation.
According to the sources, the contractor who was trusted with the garbage collection of this area failed to collect the garbage on a regular basis since the contractor was of a view that officials would never visit the low lying area. One of the agitators who dumped the trash in the municipal office, speaking on condition of anonymity said, “What irked us is that though officials caution us against dengue and demand that we keep surroundings clean, they themselves fail to do their work properly to ensure cleanliness.”
It may be recalled that some months back a few local bodies including Arakkonam in a bid to collect pending tax dues from defaulters placed huge garbage bins in front of their habitations to humiliate them into paying dues. While this ruse failed to have the anticipated effect, this incident in Ambur municipal office was seen as a reversal in Ambur town.
