Acting on a tip off, the DRI sleuths detained 5 passengers identified as Mohammed Akbar Ali, Ansar Ali, Abdul Khader, Kalander Hyder Ali and Shahul Hameed as they arrived at the airport on Tuesday, said a statement on Thursday. Two more passengers Hasan Riyaz and Ismail were also secured and imported cigarettes were seized from them also. After checks, the officers seized a total of 23,310 packs of imported cigarettes valued at Rs 69, 93,000 from them. Import of cigarettes into India for commercial purposes has been restricted and is subject to fulfilment of the conditions imposed under the Customs Act 1962, Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. And, non-compliance of import policy renders the goods liable for confiscation under section 111 of the Customs Act, 1962, added the statement. Five passengers were arrested while 2 others Hasan Riyaz and Ismail were let off since the value of cigarettes brought by them was less than Rs 20 lakh. They all were traders and had smuggled the cigarettes to supply in the local market. Further investigations are on.
