The fisheries officials said, the incarcerated fishermen hailed from Nagapattinam and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu. The fishermen were identified as Ilakkiyan (30), Kanakaraj (34), Udhaya (28) and Kalaidasan (30) of Nagapattinam and Murugan (40), Saravanan (25) and Rathinamani (26) of Thanjavur. While they were fishing at 20 nautical miles off Mallipattinam coast, the Sri Lankan navy approached them and secured them by claiming that they were fishing in the Neduntheevu area, that belonged to Sri Lanka. The navy also secured two country boats. These fishermen had gone to Mallipattinam to make a living with the help of small-scale fishing. “We request the Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and make an effort for their speedy retrieval,” said RMP Rajendra Nattar, a fisher-representative, from Keechankuppam. The Nagapattinam fishermen association also condemned the Sri Lankan action.
