One of the prime accused in the Lalithaa Jewellery heist case surrendered himself before the Chengam court in Tiruvannamalai district amidst a team of advocates on Thursday.
The Tiruvarur police on October 3, a day after the heist, conducted a vehicle check-up at Vilamal areas in Tiruvarur town, when they stopped two persons who were coming in a bike. However, the pillion rider escaped on seeing the police and hence the cops on duty became more suspicious and checked the two-wheeler and recovered 4.5 kg jewels. The rider who was identified as E Manikandan (32) from Tiruvarur, was taken into the custody by the police and an inquiry was conducted. The escaped culprit was then identified as Suresh from Seerathoppu in Tiruvarur, a close relative of a notorious bank robbery culprit ‘Tiruvarur’ Murugan.
Suresh was on a run even after the police took his family members for an inquiry. The police were keen on arresting him as he would give the lead on the hide out of Murugan, the brain behind the heist. However, Suresh, accompanied by his lawyers, surrendered before the magistrate Vignesh Prabhu. Later, the accused was handed over to the Tiruchy police.
