In a drive against illegal buildings, seven resorts functioning without valid permits were sealed in The Nilgiris on Thursday.
As complaints poured in against such illegal buildings, The Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya ordered the Town Panchayat officials to initiate action against buildings constructed in violation.
Following this, a team of officials from Town Panchayat and revenue department accompanied by the police sealed the buildings located in different areas in Kotagiri. At Orasholai area, the officials faced stiff resistance from a family, who were using the ground floor of their residence to provide accommodation to tourists. The house owner Mahendran broke into a quarrel and threatened to resort to road block with his family members. Officials however sealed the house after granting him two hours time to vacate the premises.
Kotagiri Town Panchayat Executive Officer Manikandan said that the building owners were issued notices in advance to vacate the premises. “After an inspection, the town panchayat officials submitted a report to Collector on the buildings, which were in violation and without valid permits. On the orders of the Collector, the sealing drive has commenced. Already power connections were suspended for these buildings,” he said.
The officer also said that notices were issued to owners of 40 more building found with violations and they would be sealed in the coming days.
