The CPM and its affiliate trade union CITU has urged the state government not to attempt privatising the state transport corporations by allowing operation and maintenance of the electric buses to private companies.
CITU affiliated Tamil Nadu State Transport Employees Federation (TNSTEF) said the operation of the electric buses would not help protect the environment without checking the growth of vehicular population in the state. “The Centre is providing a very little subsidy for the procurement of the e-buses to the transport corporation. The Centre’s scheme would only create financial burden for the transport corporations,” TNSTEF general secretary K Arumughanainar said, adding that moreover, the electric buses could carry less number of passengers and the buses could not be operated under the existing fares. “After the fare hike in January 2018, 25 lakh passengers have stopped travelling by buses. The Metro rail has been witnessing less patronage because of high fares,” he said, the e-buses would not help passengers in any way and hence the state should operate more buses
