The ruling AIADMK which is gearing up for the two Assembly seat bypolls has dispatched its party seniors to arrest the growing friction in the AIADMK alliance.
A team of senior AIADMK Ministers led by P Thangamani, Dindigul C Sreenivasan, R Kamaraj and C Vijaya Baskar consoled the sulking Pandian seeking his support for the party candidate in Nanguneri Assembly bypoll scheduled on October 21.
A video going viral among political circles shows Pandian venting his anger against the office of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for not fulfilling the demands raised by Pandian. “There are sub subsects of the castes coming under Devandra Kula Vellar and the community people are asking me about the promised government order. How can I go to the people and visit villages,” asks Pandian in the video.
The AIADMK also witnessed another blow with the Puthiya Thamizhagam leader Dr K Krishnasamy taking a dig at the AIADMK asking the ruling party not to use the flags of Puthiya Thamizhagam during the election campaign.
The suicide of Law Minister C Ve Shanmugham’s nephew had also mentally disturbed the AIADMK workers in poll-bound Vikravandi constituency. Adding to the woes, the DMK had also started playing caste cards by announcing compartment reservation for the Vanniyars.
“AIADMK office bearers are worried as the constituency has a sizeable population of Dalits and Thevars. Wooing both the community has become a nightmare for the ruling party. The absence of a strong AIADMK leader in Tirunelveli district had also made the ruling party to work overtime,” fumed a ruling party MLA.
“Caste politics is an election strategy and the DMK has strategically started its move in support of Vanniyars. Compartment reservations and caste-related issues are long term demands of Vanniyars and Devendra Kula Vellars and now the AIADMK is forced to react on the issue,” he said.
Arguing that there is a need for a caste-based census to ensure social justice, political commentator Raveendran Duraisamy welcomed the ongoing caste politics played by the DMK and the alliance partners of the AIADMK. Caste-based issues pop out during the time of elections and there is a need for more caste-based reforms and solutions from the policymakers, he felt.
