A Kathir, Executive Director, Evidence, an NGO based in Madurai working for the welfare of the downtrodden, on Thursday demanded the Supreme Court to monitor the implementation of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act across the country.
Kathir, addressing the media in Madurai, recalled the previous judgment delivered by the two-judge bench and said that the judges had misconception on the Dalit Atrocities Act. “Taking one or two cases as example, the judges would have come to a conclusion that the Act is misused, but according to statistics Dalits who undergo untouchability and violence not just get injustice but also get cases filed against them. According to statistics, 65 percentage of the Dalits who undergo violence face fake charges filed against them by the accused,” said Kathir.
He also said that contrary to the claims of the Dalit Atrocities Act being misused, the statistics show us that the cases are underreported.
