Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the double murder, which occurred in Thoothukudi on Sunday evening, and four others, accused of murdering a truck driver near Pudukottai in Thoothukudi on Monday morning, have also been arrested, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan said on Tuesday.
The Department of Police has been taking stern action to control crime. The culprits, accused of various crime incidents that ended in murder, had also been arrested. During July this year, 11 incidents of murder were reported in the district, and 29 accused had been arrested.
In four incidents of similar crime in August, 17 accused were nabbed and five others in connection with such crime surrendered before the court.
Besides, 14 persons, accused of murdering three persons in September, had been arrested and one surrendered before the court. The crime rate, particularly for murder, is way down since 2015 when 76 cases were reported. It dropped to 64 cases in 2016, but was up slightly recording 67 cases.
It came down further to 60 such cases in 2018 and 54 cases so far this year. During the last couple of years, 19 persons, who faced trial after being charged with murder in 10 cases, were sentenced to life in prison. Moreover, two other accused, convicted of murder, had been facing a 10-year rigorous imprisonment and two others a seven-year imprisonment.
Of 35 cases concerning crime such as chain snatching and waylaid robbery in July, the investigation teams cracked 20 cases and arrested 21 accused and stolen property worth Rs 7,73,230 was recovered. Over the last two months, 59 rowdy elements were arrested after filing 47 cases, the SP said.
