The Minister, at the inauguration event of a conclave organised by the institution in the city, also insisted that all of them take an oath to not use plastics at least once every week.
Inaugurating the two-day ‘IIT Madras-Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Technology Conclave’ and exhibition to work towards ‘Vision New India 2022--Development through Technology for All’ at IIT-M Research Park here in the city, Meghwal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for banning single-use plastics. “IIT Madras has to invent alternatives, which, if available, can have people use them easily in their daily life,’’ he said.
Stating that everybody should take oath that, at least for one day in a week, they would not use single-use plastics, Meghwal said India was one of the signatories of the Paris Agreement. ‘’We have to protect the environment, reduce the carbon emission and we have to take suo motu action in this direction,’’ he added.
“The governments of Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh have created Happiness Ministries. How we can increase happiness in society? We have to collaborate and use the technology of IIT-Madras, which has invented many things that I saw in the exhibition being held as part of this event,” Meghwal said.
