Irked by a spate of thefts in various localities in and around Tirupattur since last month, suspected to be carried out by an unidentified gang, nearly 50 residents from villages in the soon-to-be district recently submitted a petition to the DSP’s office demanding action.
According to sources, the burglary was first recorded on August 15, with the modus operandi of the gang being to strike at locked houses and decamp with the cash and jewellery there. In one house, the gang were even chased by Venketesan (35), who ran a barber shop. However, on seeing him, one of the gang members attacked him with an iron rod, leaving Venketesan injured, sources said. He was then rushed to a private hospital for treatment.
Subsequently, nearly 50 people on Wednesday submitted a petition to the DSP’s office in Tirupattur demanding action against the culprits. People even mentioned Venketesan’s pet dog having been poisoned by the thieves, with one suggesting that it was an act of vengeance by the gang for Venketesan’s attempts to nab them.
“Though we are patrolling at nights, we do not know how long we can keep this up as the men have to go for work during the day. We want the police to arrest the thieves and give us peace of mind,” the residents said.
Sources said that when the gang broke into a house at Likinayakanpatti, they locked the doors and then cooked and ate a meal of macaroni before leaving, with cooking utensils scattered all over the room.
When contacted on the issue, Vellore SP Pravesh Kumar said that the matter would be discussed in detail at the Tirupatthur sub division meet on Friday, and assured of immediate action.
