The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has opposed the Tangedco’s move to install meters for new agricultural power connections.
“Hitherto all the new agricultural connections should be installed meters and bi-monthly reading should be taken. This is nothing but an attempt to end the free power supply to the farmers,” he said.
Shanmugham said that his association expressed condemnation vehemently for the state government. “After calling himself a farmer repeatedly, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is acting against the interest of the farmers,” he said. He said that in Tirupur, the electricity official went to a farmer’s residence at Avinashi taluk to fix a meter for a 10-year-old power connection. “Farmers later met the executive engineer and expressed their strong opposition. They got free electricity for agriculture after a long struggle,” he said, adding that if the government tries to revise the free electricity scheme for the agriculture, 21 lakh farmers using the power supply would be forced to move out of farming altogether.
He urged the state government to direct Tangedco to withdraw its order on fixing meter to the agricultural power supply scheme. “We call upon the farmers to prevent the officials from fixing the meters if they make any such attempts,” he said.
