A team of doctors, led by P Krishna, Joint Director of Health Services (Coimbatore District), Health and Family Welfare Department, on Thursday held an inquiry into a complaint of broken needle being stuck in the thigh of a new born while vaccinating at Mettupalayam Government Hospital.
The team of doctors then visited the baby, who has been admitted again for treatment, after the infant developed swelling in his thighs. They are likely to submit a report to State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) based on the outcome of the inquiry.
The SHRC has issued a notice to Director of Health Services demanding an explanation on the issue. Parents Prabhakaran and Malarvizhi have also lodged a complaint with Mettupalayam police seeking action against the nurse and the doctor for negligence of duty.
The infant was administered a vaccine on its thigh on August 21 and the woman was discharged from the hospital on August 31. More than a fortnight later on September 8, the family found a broken needle poking out of the thigh and carefully took it out.
